When Do You Need a Tree Survey Report?
You will typically need a tree survey report if:
- Your trees are covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)
- Your property is located within a Conservation Area
- You are submitting a planning application
- You are undertaking construction, landscaping, or development work near trees
What Is a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)?
A Tree Preservation Order is a legal protection placed on specific trees or woodlands by your local authority. It prevents:
- Cutting down
- Topping or lopping
- Uprooting
- Wilful damage or destruction
Without formal permission, carrying out work on a TPO-protected tree is a criminal offence. A professional tree survey report is often required to support your application for consent.
What About Conservation Areas?
If your property lies within a conservation area, all trees with a trunk diameter over 75mm (measured at 1.5m above ground) are automatically protected.
Before carrying out any work, you must give your local authority six weeks’ written notice. A detailed tree survey helps justify your proposed work and improves the likelihood of approval.
What Does a Tree Survey Report Include?
Our comprehensive tree survey reports are prepared in line with British Standards (BS5837 where applicable) and typically include:
- Tree species identification
- Tree condition and health assessment
- Structural integrity and risk evaluation
- Tree dimensions (height, spread, diameter)
- Recommendations for management or removal
- Impact assessment for development sites
- Plans and mapping (if required)
